Barbara O'Connor is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Communications at Dublin City University.
She has an academic background in sociology and social anthropology and her research focuses on the role of media in the formation of identities - gender, ethnic, national and transnational, both in historical and contemporary contexts. Her research includes media representations and media audiences as well as other popular cultural forms and practices such as tourism and recreational dance.
Barbara O'Connor is currently a Director of SIM (The centre for Society, Information, Media), the School of Communications University Designated Research Centre. SIM was established in 2005 to embrace the broad research interests of staff in the School of Communication, including those engaged in media practice as well as academic research on media production, policy and consumption issues.
